Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.
- Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death across all ages in the United States. It is the fifth-leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older.
Alzheimer’s disease can affect different people in different ways, but the most common symptom pattern begins with gradually worsening difficulty in remembering new information. This is because disruption of brain cell function usually begins in regions involved in forming new memories. As damage spreads, individuals experience other difficulties. Peanut butter helps diagnose Alzheimer’s disease
“A dollop of peanut butter and a ruler can be used to confirm a diagnosis of early stage Alzheimer’s disease, University of Florida Health researchers have found.
Jennifer Stamps, a graduate student in the University of Florida (UF) McKnight Brain Institute Center for Smell and Taste, and her colleagues reported the findings of a small pilot study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences.”
She used peanut butter because “it is a “pure odorant” that is only detected by the olfactory nerve and is easy to access.”
The study tested 24 patients from a clinic where they were already being tested for dementia. “The patient closed his or her eyes and mouth and blocked one nostril.The clinician opened the peanut butter container and held the ruler next to the open nostril while the patient breathed normally. By moving the peanut butter up the ruler 1 cm at a time during the patient’s exhalation, they were able to measure the distance at which the patient could detect the odor. The distance was recorded and the procedure repeated on the other nostril after a 90-second delay.”
“The scientists found that patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease had a dramatic difference in detecting odor between the left and right nostril – the left nostril was impaired and did not detect the smell until it was an average of 10 cm closer to the nose than the right nostril had made the detection in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
This was not the case in patients with other kinds of dementia; instead, these patients had either no differences in odor detection between nostrils or the right nostril was worse at detecting odor than the left one.”
The reason why this test may work is because “The ability to smell is associated with the first cranial nerve and is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline.” It’s a very early test with a small sample group, but it will help guide future research studies. Someday soon a test like this one could be used in a doctors office to help confirm an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

New Study Looks into Benefits of Coconut Oil in Treating Alzheimer’s
“After studying the effects of ginkgo leaves, vitamin E and painkillers on Alzheimer’s — researchers at the University of South Florida have turned their attention to another possible natural remedy: coconut oil.”
“The first clinical trial of its kind, the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute enrolled 65 individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s to measure the effects of coconut oil — versus placebo — on the disease.” The research comes out of efforts by Dr. Mary Newport, whose book Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was a Cure?has sparked interest in studying coconut oil and their ketones as a treatment for Alzheimer’s.
As a pediatrician who became her husband’s caregiver when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s she began to look for alternate solutions because his medications were not working. “Before the coconut oil, he could not tie his shoes. His weird slow gait … That improved. He walked normally and he was able to start running again. He was able to start reading again, his conversation improved dramatically and then over several months we saw improvements in his memory,” Newport said.
“Canadian researcher, Stephen Cunnane studies brain metabolism at Universite de Sherbrooke. His question: How do you revive aging or diseased brain cells in the elderly and those with Alzheimer’s?Using PET scans, he found that ketones are indeed a possible alternative brain fuel, sharing similar excitement to Newport.
“The reason it is exciting, it suggests the brain is starving as you slip into Alzheimer’s disease. If you can provide an alternative fuel there may be an alternative to resuscitate parts of the brain,” said Prof. Cunnane.”

“There are several other large studies of MCT oil for Alzheimer’s that are currently in progress as well. Ketones as an alternative fuel are also being studied at USF for treatment of cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), wound healing, oxygen toxicity, epilepsy, and status epilepticus, using ketogenic diets that contain medium chain triglycerides and also ketone esters. While the results of these studies will take some time, for now you can provide ketones to the brain as an alternative fuel by consuming foods that contain medium chain triglycerides to produce ketones.”
WHO SHOULD TRY THIS?
People who have a neurodegenerative disease that involves decreased glucose uptake in neurons could benefit from taking higher amounts of coconut and/or MCT oil to produce ketones which may be used by brain cells as energy. These diseases include Alzheimer’s and other dementias, Parkinson’s, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s), multiple sclerosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, autism, Down’s syndrome, and Huntington’s chorea. Ketones can also serve as an alternative fuel for other cells in the body that are insulin resistant or cannot transport glucose, and could potentially lessen the effects of diabetes I or II on the brain and other organs. If you are at risk due to family history, you consider making this dietary change as well. If your loved one is in assisted living, the doctor may be willing to prescribe coconut oil to be given at each meal, increasing gradually.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE?
If you take too much oil too fast, you may experience indigestion, cramping or diarrhea. To avoid these symptoms, take with food and start with 1 teaspoon coconut oil or MCT oil per meal, increasing slowly as tolerated over a week or longer. If diarrhea develops drop back to the previous level. For most people, the goal would be to increase gradually to 4-6 tablespoons a day, depending on the size of the person, spread over 2-4 meals. Mixing MCT oil and coconut oil could provide higher levels and a steady level of ketones. One formula is to mix 16 ounces MCT oil plus 12 ounces coconut oil in a quart jar and increase slowly as tolerated, starting with 1 teaspoon. This mixture will stay liquid at room temperature.

There has been talk in our office lately about the use of irradiation on food, particularly on chicken. The question is what is irradiation and is it safe?
Food irradiation (the application of ionizing radiation to food) is a technology that improves the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects. Like pasteurizing milk and canning fruits and vegetables, irradiation can make food safer for the consumer.
Why Irradiate Food?
Irradiation can serve many purposes.
- Prevention of Foodborne Illness – irradiation can be used to effectively eliminate organisms that cause foodborne illness, such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
- Preservation – irradiation can be used to destroy or inactivate organisms that cause spoilage and decomposition and extend the shelf life of foods.
- Control of Insects – irradiation can be used to destroy insects in or on tropical fruits imported into the United States. Irradiation also decreases the need for other pest-control practices that may harm the fruit.
- Delay of Sprouting and Ripening – irradiation can be used to inhibit sprouting (e.g., potatoes) and delay ripening of fruit to increase longevity.
- Sterilization – irradiation can be used to sterilize foods, which can then be stored for years without refrigeration. Sterilized foods are useful in hospitals for patients with severely impaired immune systems, such as patients with AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy. Foods that are sterilized by irradiation are exposed to substantially higher levels of treatment than those approved for general use. FDA Consumer Site Food Irradiation: What You Need to Know
The FDA claims that these food are safe for consumption. Yet poultry is allowed 4.5 kGy (kiloGrays ) of absorbed raditation. In comparison a chest xray is .00000040 kGy. So many wonder how can that much radiation in our food be okay or even healthy for us. Dr Mercola and others strongly oppose the use of irradiation in food. It’s hard to come to a conclusion on an issue in which both sides say they have science supporting their position. But if you’d like to avoid irradiated poultry there are a couple of things you can do.
The first is to look for the symbol on the left. This is not a 100% catchall though:
“FDA requires that irradiated foods bear the international symbol for irradiation. Look for the Radura symbol along with the statement “Treated with radiation” or “Treated by irradiation” on the food label. Bulk foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are required to be individually labeled or to have a label next to the sale container. FDA does not require that individual ingredients in multi-ingredient foods (e.g., spices) be labeled.” FDA
“U.S. government only requires irradiated whole foods to be labeled, not foods with one or more irradiated ingredients. For example, buy a frozen lasagna and the ingredients may include ground beef, but the manufacturer does not have to say whether that beef was irradiated or not.” About.com
The second thing to do is to buy fresh and local. Oregon is lucky to be the home of Foster Farms not only are their products not treated with hormones they are not treated with irradiation.

And don’t forget to observe proper food handling. The main reason they irradiate poultry is to prevent food borne illness, but you can do prevention in your own kitchen. Make sure to wash your hands before and after handling raw meat, use a separate cutting board and knife to avoid cross-contamination, and don’t defrost chicken in the microwave choose instead to thaw it in the fridge and use it within two days.
